What is Heat Convection

Convection is one way heat energy moves. Convection occurs when heat is transferred by the movement of liquids or gases. The other methods of heat transfer are conduction and radiation.

When fluids are heated on a stove, the molecules become larger and fluid becomes expands and become lighter. The heated molecules take up more space and rise to the top, while the cooler molecules sink to the bottom. These cooler molecules then become heated. The process is repeated. This cycle is called the convection current.

This process continues until all the water is the same temperature. This is an example of Entropy.

Demonstrations

  1. Heating water in a test tube, test with thermometer
  2. Lava lamp
